Date, Time, Location

Welcome to the world of gouache — a bold, versatile, matte and highly pigmented medium that bridges the gap between watercolour and acrylic. Your teacher, Julia Softley, is here to share her passion for this rich and responsive medium, known for its opacity, layering potential, and stunning finish.

This class is suitable for all ages and levels of experience. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned creative, you’re warmly welcomed.

Julia will guide you through everything you need to get started in this meditative and expressive art practice. You’ll receive ongoing in-class feedback and one-on-one support, helping you to paint tonally and develop your unique visual style with confidence.

As an educator, Julia believes everyone brings something original to the page — her greatest joy is helping students uncover and grow their individual artistic voice.

To support this, you’ll be given an individual reference image to spark your creativity and reduce the urge to compare your work to others.

Some key components of this two-hour class:

  • An appreciation for quality gouache materials and brushes

  • Understanding different paper types and surfaces

  • Selecting and using reference images effectively

  • Tips and tricks for setting up and starting with confidence

  • Three essential gouache techniques Julia uses in her own practice: layering, dry brushing, and glazing to develop tone and texture

  • The joy of disconnecting from distractions and activating your right brain through painting

By the end of the class, you’ll take home your finished artwork, as well as valuable gouache techniques to continue exploring independently.

Please note: Public sessions require a minimum of 5 guests to proceed. If this number isn’t reached, the class may be cancelled or rescheduled. In that case, you’ll be contacted by email or SMS at least one day prior, with options to refund or reschedule.
